Salon-de-Provence sits exactly between Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Arles and the Mediterranean. That is what makes it such a practical base: every evening you come back to a quiet town.
Seven destinations, seven moods
- Aix-en-Provence (30 min) — cours Mirabeau, private mansions, Cézanne's studio.
- Arles (40 min) — Roman arena, Alyscamps, Fondation Van Gogh and LUMA.
- Les Baux-de-Provence and the Alpilles (35 min) — hilltop village, Carrières des Lumières, olive mills.
- Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (35 min) — Glanum, the Wednesday market, Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.
- The Luberon (50 min) — Gordes, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, Lourmarin.
- The Camargue and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (55 min) — flamingos, white horses, rice fields.
- Cassis and the Calanques (1 hr) — white cliffs, coves, Cassis white wine.
When to go
Lavender on the Valensole plateau flowers from late June to mid-July. Harvest brings the wine estates alive in September. In winter the light is low and the villages are empty — the best season for photographers.
