Villages and sights to visit around Salon-de-Provence

Published on 30 August 2026 · 2 min read

Les Baux, Saint-Rémy, Arles, Silvacane abbey, the Camargue: what we recommend seeing, in the order we recommend it.

Salon sits at the geographic centre of Provence: most of the great sights take half a day, leaving the evening free for dinner in town.

Hilltop villages

  • Les Baux-de-Provence (35 min) — the village carved into the rock, the castle and the Carrières des Lumières just below.
  • Eygalières and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (30–40 min) — Wednesday market, Glanum, the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole cloister.
  • The Luberon (45 min to 1 hr) — Lourmarin, Bonnieux, Ménerbes and the ochre cliffs of Roussillon.
  • Cassis and the calanques (1 hr) — harbour, vineyards and boats to the creeks.

Towns of art and history

  • Arles (45 min) — Roman arena, Fondation Van Gogh, LUMA.
  • Aix-en-Provence (35 min) — cours Mirabeau, Cézanne's studio, private mansions.
  • Avignon (50 min) — Palais des Papes and the Saint-Bénézet bridge.
  • Marseille (45 min) — Vieux-Port, MuCEM, Notre-Dame de la Garde.

Nature and big landscapes

  • Silvacane Abbey and the Durance valley (30 min).
  • The Camargue and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (1 hr) — flamingos, white horses, beaches.
  • The Valensole plateau (1 hr 15) — lavender in bloom from mid-June to mid-July.
  • The Alpilles range — hiking trails and olive oil mills.

We are happy to sketch a day-by-day itinerary based on the season and the time you have.
