Continue on to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (an extra 15 minutes) for lunch on a shaded terrace, before heading back to Salon-de-Provence in the mid-afternoon ahead of peak traffic.

Heading east: Aix-en-Provence and Cézanne's countryside

Aix-en-Provence is easily reached in about 35 minutes via the A8 motorway, or in 45 minutes along gentle country roads lined with vineyards. This city of art and fountains deserves a full day of leisurely wandering among historic mansions and vibrant outdoor markets.

To park effortlessly in the central car parks, leave by 9:00 AM. You can stroll along the famous Cours Mirabeau in the morning, visit a gallery or museum at noon, and drive out to the foot of Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the late afternoon. Heading south and west: Arles and the gateway to the Camargue

Arles and its remarkable Roman heritage are situated just 40 minutes from Salon-de-Provence via the A54 dual carriageway. Van Gogh's historic city offers an ideal mix of ancient monuments, contemporary photography exhibitions, and generous local dining.

If you wish to continue further into the Camargue regional nature reserve and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, allow about 1 hour and 10 minutes in total.
